Weekly Reflection – A Journey of Gratitude

By Dieumerci T Kalonji

This week’s learning experiences were especially meaningful because they focused on gratitude, perspective, and finding purpose during periods of challenge. The W13 Study: A Journey of Gratitude readings and videos encouraged me to slow down and recognize the small but important influences in my life those that contribute to strength, clarity, and motivation. One insight that particularly resonated with me was the reminder that gratitude is not simply a positive emotion; it is an intentional practice that has the power to shape the way we experience each day.

A key takeaway from the study was the idea that gratitude can transform our understanding of both success and failure. Several individuals in the videos described moments when their plans did not unfold as expected. Rather than becoming discouraged, they chose to view those experiences as opportunities for growth. This perspective aligns with what we have emphasized throughout the semester: meaningful growth rarely occurs in comfortable circumstances. When I approach difficulties with a sense of gratitude, I am better able to recognize the value in the learning process rather than focusing solely on the end result.

Another concept that stood out to me was the link between gratitude and strong relationships. This week served as a reminder that the support of family, friends, mentors, and classmates plays an essential role in both personal and academic success. Acknowledging this support helps me remain grounded and motivated. It also makes it easier to prioritize what truly matters and avoid being overwhelmed by minor frustrations.

Looking ahead, I am eager to continue developing gratitude as a regular part of my daily routine. I hope to be more deliberate in recognizing my progress, appreciating the lessons I encounter, and valuing the individuals who influence my life. I also aim to practice gratitude during stressful moments, particularly as the semester concludes, so I can maintain perspective and stay aligned with my broader goals.

Overall, this week reinforced that gratitude is an active, intentional choice one that brings clarity, resilience, and a deeper sense of purpose. It enables me to see beyond immediate challenges and continue moving forward with focus and optimism.
