WEEK 6 REFLECTION: Insights from "So You Want to Be an Entrepreneur"
By Dieumerci T Kalonji
This week’s readings and videos offered a powerful shift in how I view entrepreneurship. Before diving into the material, I thought of entrepreneurship mostly in terms of launching a business, spotting a market need, and offering a solution. However, this week expanded my perspective, revealing the deeper mindset, values, and personal growth required to truly thrive as an entrepreneur.
One of the most impactful ideas for me was that entrepreneurship isn’t primarily about wealth or independence—it’s about identifying real problems and being committed to creating meaningful solutions. In the video with Phil Romano, his passion and sense of purpose stood out. He emphasized that successful entrepreneurship is about continual innovation and doing work that matters to you. This reminded me that to create something truly impactful, my efforts must be rooted in something I genuinely care about—not just a desire for profit.
The concept of risk also took on new meaning for me. I used to think that entrepreneurs were simply risk-takers by nature, but the materials this week helped me see that successful entrepreneurs are actually skilled risk managers. The idea of “calculated risk” helped shift my mindset. Risk is not something to fear, but something to approach with thoughtful planning, flexibility, and courage.
Another key takeaway was the emphasis on personal character. Traits like perseverance, creativity, adaptability, and internal drive are essential. These qualities often matter more than the brilliance of the original idea. What struck me is that these traits aren’t just innate—they can be developed over time through experience and intentional effort.
Looking ahead, I’m eager to learn more about how entrepreneurs identify the right opportunities, build effective teams, and scale their ideas while staying true to their mission. I want to understand how to create a business that not only succeeds financially but also aligns with my values and long-term purpose.
Overall, this week pushed me to think beyond the basics of business and consider the kind of entrepreneur—and person—I want to become. It’s both a challenging and exciting journey, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.
