Week 4 Reflection: How Will You Measure Your Life?

By Dieumerci T Kalonji

This week’s lesson focused on Clayton Christensen’s insightful perspective from How Will You Measure Your Life?, which led me to reflect deeply on what truly defines a successful and fulfilling life. Rather than chasing outward signs of success like money, status, or job titles, Christensen urges us to consider deeper values—such as meaningful relationships, personal integrity, and living with purpose. The readings and videos were not only educational, but also spoke to me on a personal and spiritual level.

One of the ideas that stood out the most was the need to balance deliberate strategy with emergent strategy. We're often told to plan everything ahead, set clear goals, and stay on a fixed path. But Christensen explains that some of life’s greatest opportunities appear unexpectedly. His message reminded me that while having a vision is important, being open to change—and remaining rooted in our values—is just as crucial. It taught me that ambition should be paired with humility and adaptability.

Another impactful takeaway was the way we allocate our personal resources—especially time, attention, and energy. How we choose to spend our time reveals our true priorities. That realization made me stop and think: Am I truly investing in the relationships and activities that matter most? Or am I letting distractions take up space that should be devoted to loved ones and personal growth? These are tough but necessary questions to ask.

Christensen’s example of keeping the Sabbath, even during pivotal moments in his career, left a strong impression on me. It reminded me that maintaining integrity sometimes means making hard choices, especially when it would be easier to bend our principles. Small compromises can build up over time and shape who we ultimately become.

As I move forward, I’m looking forward to learning more about how to bring together my core values and my career goals. I want my definition of success to include not just accomplishments, but the kind of person I am becoming and the positive impact I leave behind.

Overall, this week has pushed me to think more deeply—not just mentally, but spiritually. It has encouraged me to take a more intentional and values-driven approach to my goals, measuring success not by what the world sees, but by the lasting meaning and purpose I create in my life.
